Second Opinion
As a patient, you have every right to get a Second Opinion on cancer. When you are faced with such a diagnosis, a Second Opinion can be helpful, as well as giving a more stable piece of mind. Though it’s true that a second opinion is more expensive, if you can afford it, you probably will wish to continue. And contrary to most fears, waiting a few weeks for a second opinion will not usually be a hazard for long-term outcomes. If anything, it will most likely benefit you with a Second Opinion.
You should always consider getting a Second Opinion for the following reasons.
• When an illness is very serious or life-threatening.
• When a diagnosis or its course of treatment is unclear for you or your
doctor.
• When an illness is rare and could benefit from the expertise of a specialist
who has seen many cases.
• When you want to take advantage of experimental or additional treatment
options that aren’t usually available.
• When you have doubts or concerns or believe that questions regarding
the illness or its treatment haven’t been answered satisfactorily.
• When a second opinion provides greater peace-of-mind.
• To make sure your doctor is correct in his findings
• You feel that the doctor has underestimated the seriousness of your disease.
• You may feel that there is a better treatment plan that your first doctor
may not agree with.
Most doctors are comfortable if you wish to seek
out a Second Opinion. They may even recommend you to
another qualified doctor for a Second Opinion. In addition
to this, you may also wish to consider asking your
family and friends for help in getting a Second Opinion,
particularly if they have had a disease like yours.
By asking them, they may know someone who would give
a great Second Opinion. Also be sure to check your
hospital when looking for a Second Opinion. Hospitals
usually have referral list for doctors in your area – a
great resource for getting a Second Opinion.
